Dr. Jackie Leung
Dr. Jackie Leung is a Canadian pianist with strong interests in performing new music, championing lesser-known repertoire, improvising, and studying historical performance practices. She is also a founding member of the piano trio Avant Perpetuo with Yoona Han and Jin Lee Youn.
Recorded at the suggestion of the composer himself, Dr. Leung has a forthcoming album of the piano music by revered American composer Alvin Singleton composed through 2023, supported by grants from the Ontario Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts. She has also contributed a pedagogical video to the “From the Artists Bench” series for the Frances Clark Center for Piano Pedagogy on Singleton’s piano music and is editor to the new Schott edition of Singleton’s Mutations piano solo.
Dr. Leung is frequently requested to adjudicate throughout Canada and is a member of the College of Examiners for the Royal Conservatory of Music with teaching experience of over 25 years. Her experience includes being lecturer for the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, chamber coaching at the Toronto School for Strings, Chamber, Undergraduate Piano instruction, masterclasses at Stony Brook University in New York, and masterclasses at the University of Cuenca (Ecuador) for the Festival Internacional de Música Académica Contemporánea II and workshops for the HK Baptist University and Lebanese American University.
Dr. Leung’s teaching philosophy offers a holistic experience inspired by pedagogue Jacques Dalcroze. She encourages a kinesthetic experience using eurhythmics, singing and improvisation to foster deeper interpretive studies of music, facilitate technical and rhythmic control and enable students to reach their highest artistic potential. Leung has earned an Intermediate Award from the Dalcroze Eurhythmics International Board.

She has recently performed Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor with the OCMS orchestra, new music alongside Bach’s Goldberg variations for Soundstreams’ Keyed up Festival. Other defining performances include being a soloist for Olivier Messiaen’s epic work Canyons des étoiles at the Banff Centre with the Ensemble Evolution orchestra under the baton of Steven Schick, Scriabin’s Op. 8 piano etudes with improvisation at the International Society for Improvised Music conference and Erik Spangler’s Double Identities, for
Turntable, piano and ipad with DJ Dubble8 at the Baltimore Boom Bap Hip Hop Society show.
Dr. Leung has a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance from Stony Brook University. She also holds Masters and a Bachelor degree in piano performance with a Minor in Management from the Schulich School of Music at McGill University. Her principal teachers since university include Christina Dahl, Kyoko Hashimoto, Henri-Paul
Sicsic and Thomas Davidson. Precollege teachers include Andrew Markow and Connie Lam.
